Yes there is free street parking available at the North Brisbane clinic.
  • How do I know if my child has a speech or language difficulty?
Whilst there is some variation amongst individual children, typical speech and language development follows a predictable progression. Research shows that specific skills are generally mastered by a particular age. We call these Communication Milestones. Speech pathologists, and parents, can use Communication Milestones to identify when children have difficulties or delays. You can find out more about Communication Milestones in our Blog Articles: Is my Child Saying the Right Speech Sounds? When are Speech Sound Errors a Problem? • How long does an assessment take?
An assessment typically takes between 1 and 3 hours to complete. This would normally be completed over several appointments. Assessment length will vary depending on: the communication skills requiring assessment (e.g. Speech sounds + language skills + literacy skills) child’s testing behaviour (e.g. confidence to attempt new tasks, attention & concentration)
  • How long does it take to get a report?
An assessment report takes between 1-3 hours to complete. Report time varies depending on the number of assessments completed and the individual complexity of the child’s needs. Reports can usually be completed within 1-2 weeks of assessment. Please let us know if you require a report for your child by a specific date and we will endeavour to meet this deadline.
  • At what age can my child start speech therapy?
Children get the most benefit from speech pathology with early intervention. Play My Way accepts referrals for children as young as 18 months when there are concerns about communication skill development. Children with a hearing loss may be seen at any stage following diagnosis of their hearing loss, and may be seen as young as 6 months. If you have concerns but aren’t sure about the need for speech pathology – don’t ‘Wait and see’. Get in touch using the ‘Enquiry Form’ on the website. We can talk through your concerns and provide guidance for your child’s specific needs.
  • How long are therapy sessions?
Therapy sessions are typically 1 hour or 45 minutes. The last 10-15 minutes of each session is required to write session notes and plan for the next appointment. The length of appointments is adapted to meet the individual needs of children and their families. Session length will also be based on the recommended therapy approach. Some therapy approaches work best with shorter, more frequent appointments (e.g. 30 minute sessions, three times a week). We will discuss and decide on the best therapy schedule collaboratively with each family.
  • How often will my child need to attend therapy?
We will discuss and agree the best therapy program to meet the specific needs of your child. Appointment frequency can vary from once a fortnight to several times a week. Play My Way recognises that many families are busy with competing demands for their time. We strive to meet children’s needs within the constraints of family availability.
